LET US HAVE PEACE

Lincoln Memorial University

Lincoln Memorial University was established in 1897 as a tribute to Abraham Lincoln and in alignment with his principles and ethos. According to historical accounts, in 1863, President Lincoln recommended to General O. O. Howard, a Union officer, his aspiration to form a prominent university to benefit the residents of the Cumberland Gap once the Civil War concluded. Situated adjacent to the Cumberland Gap National Park, the university's sprawling 1,000-acre campus is renowned for its exceptional natural beauty and serves as a distinguished feature within the nation.

The National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865 awards two annual scholarships to qualifying students.

In addition to providing scholarships, NSDU assists with enhancements to the university campus and museum.  Through member support, the Society is able to purchase various items for the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum which opened in 1977, and is now a 21,000  square foot facility and contains one of the most significant private repositories of Lincoln and Civil War materials.
