LET US HAVE PEACE

Work of the Society

The National Society Daughters of the Union, founded in 1912, is a s a non-profit, non-political women's service organization dedicated to honoring the memory of our Civil War ancestors, and fostering a spirit of patriotism, loyalty and love of country.  The work of the Society is performed by our members at the local and national levels and includes grave markings, laying wreaths at historic locations, providing ROTC and JROTC Awards, and participating with Wreaths Across America by ensuring that every soldier at Andersonville Prison Cemetery, in Georgia, is remembered with a wreath upon their grave.  We also provide support and project assistance to Hindman Settlement School, as well as provide scholarships opportunities at Lincoln Memorial University.

Wreaths Across America

REMEMBER. HONOR. TEACH.
In 1992, the Worcester Wreath Company in Maine identified an excess of wreaths in their inventory. With a desire to commemorate and pay tribute to the fallen heroes and veterans of our nation, they decided to place these wreaths on the grave markers in Arlington Cemetery. This seemingly small act has since evolved into a non-profit organization known as Wreaths Across America. The annual wreath-laying ceremony, which originated over 30 years ago, occurs on the second or third Saturday of December. The journey from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery, undertaken annually by Wreaths Across America, has earned the reputation of being “the world’s largest veterans’ parade.” Along the way, the convoy of trucks, accompanied by local law enforcement, staff, and supporters, makes stops at schools, monuments, veterans’ homes, and communities to disseminate information about the Wreaths Across America mission and emphasize the importance of remembrance, honor, and education. The nationwide network of volunteers associated with Wreaths Across America has successfully positioned over 2.7 million sponsored veterans' wreaths on the headstones of our nation's service members at 3,702 participating locations. This accomplishment was made possible through the backing of more than 5,000 sponsorship groups, corporate contributions, and in-kind donations from the transportation industry across the country, including the National Society of the Daughters of the Union 1861-1865.
